Fiona's folding continues

The world is all a bit chaotic, here and there at the moment, but I have managed to keep plodding along with some folds - I just seem to forget to photograph them and post on them!

So here is the next instalment with a few detail shots as well.

Next lot of letters as words

As indicated in my earlier ALAW2011 blog post I am using this 2011 second alphabet to create a Pause and Reflection Post with the words: mindful, pax, be and joy on one of each of the four faces of a recycled fence post.

The first blog post presented the letters that form mindful. This blog post presents:

BE - in the moment

PAX - seek peace.

JOY - be filled with joy

polumn-

I can see why there is no such word as polumn...poulmn...numlop sounds like it could be! but that is what this is about...China trip is creeping up on me and only three weeks to go. I prefer to be ahead of time than behind. I see feathers everywhere now and there are more and more friends picking feathers up than ever before. I am not the only one with a feather fetish now!

June - better late than never

This year has been a little on the busy side! However, here are my last letters for the first half of the year. I am making a little box to house them, and my handyman around the house is going to manufacture a little gadget to hold the letters together by one corner. So when the box is finished and the gadget is made and atttached ... soon I hope ... I will post a pic.

(My problem with the scanning and colour variation I think is in part due to different weights of tracing paper that I have used too.)

I know what I am doing next and I have even started a quick prototype, now I just have to get it going. Don't hold your breath, I'm off to New York in 3 weeks for a 2 week holiday, so it might not appear until after that!

I haven't been on the blog for a long time but everyone has been very busy. So many wonderful interpretations! It's like looking in some one's jewelry box at all their treasures.

All the best,

Meg

and I and J

I feel like the letters are getting better, crisper, cleaner and I do like the gold blob, which is supposed to be a diamond but still looks rather globby to me.

G and H

Presentation begins to be on my mind....a picture of them all in a frame maybe, but that would be a big frame. They are formal letters...formal presentation?? or not??? I've toyed with " a letter a day" in some special place.

more letters...finally!

I am unable tonight to upload 3 pictures at once, so 3 short posts. Here are E and F. I am enjoying the alphabet more and more as I go along. It helped to thin the ink I am using!! :-) I still would like crisper, thinner thin strokes.

OK, OK so I have been tardy

I have been feeling as though I have let the ALAW 2011 team down over the last little while as I had not got started with the first alphabet for 2011. Strangely enough I know what the end product is - a Pause and Reflection Post based on a single alphabet.

The letters I want to share in this post are those for the first reflective word - Mindful.

The letters above are routed into a 150mm square wooden post that is about 1.2m high. When finished the post is meant to be a destination point in a garden - somewhere to wander to and circle the post and reflect on the words on the four faces of the post. The post has to sit in the weather so the letters can 'cure' and grey.

I'm using capitals of a popular script known as "Barry scrawl" - there is a basic form but it is not calligraphy and the router is not a great pen or brush. The photos were taken in the late afternoon so some great shadows going on. I have not sanded the rough edges off because I would lose all that aged look of the wood.

Elaine's July and August

I am  w a y  behind! We were overseas until the middle of August and then there was lots of catching up to do, but here at last are the letters for the past two months.

I have used a material called Tyvek, a non-toxic sheet of bonded, spun polyethylene fibres, which changes its form when heat is applied. I painted both sides of the 7cm square with fabric paints and then using a brown iridescent oil paint, in stick form, I wrote a monoline capital. The squares were then heated with an iron. The result depends on the length and direction of the iron’s heat. A little bit of control, but not much, which I find exciting! Whether the shapes are concave or convex depends on which side the heat is applied, eg. ‘A’ and ‘H” were heated from the back and all the others from the front. The squares have now shrunk in size to between 3.5 and 4 cm. The letters aren’t always recognisable and often distorted, but I like the way they have now become integrated into the material.

PIECING TOGETHER WITH NATURE'S GIFTS

It has been a joy to use these soft feathery little specimens, making them into something totally outside the square. Once using feathers in artwork it is hard to let them go....so who knows where the feather will take me, from the alphabet and beyond.

Violet's first alphabet

Alphabet - first set - only have W, X Y and Z to finish.  Will get that done and photograph final project in the coming week (I hope!).  Didn't realize that I had already done one "T" so ended up with two in the end.
Cheers!  Violet
